Where the real world and the wireless collide

FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions

What is the CUTLASS Treasure Hunt?
Players search their location--both virtual and real-- for answers to clues delivered by cellphone or personal computer connected to the internet. After correctly answering 6 out of 8 of the clues, the winning team finds the treasure chest and solves the clue to open it.

Can you give me an example of what the game is really like?
For our Times Square Treasure Hunt, players picked the clue "KISSING" which read "Who's kissing who on Broadway/42nd?" One of the 3 hints suggested a cartoon character. The teammates ran to the WB storefront to see a statue of Bugs kissing a lady bunny. A bemused sales clerk told them her name was Lola. After inputting Lola on the cellphone, they received a congratulatory notice and their new score was posted for all other players to see.

What if I can't find the answer to a question?
Each question comes with hints that help teams zero in on the crucial piece of information. If you get stuck, you can move on to another question. You need only to answer 6 of the 8 preliminary clues to gain access to the final question and the location of the grand prize.

Do I have to solve the questions all by myself?
You can play alone, or form a team. When possible, CUTLASS will help put individuals together into teams. Teammates can also play on PC from home or from the local internet cafe.

Can I play even if I'm not on location?
Yes. You can act as "mission control" for a team by using your web browser to track the game's progress and by looking for answers from online sources.

How long does the game take?
About 1.5 to 2.5 hours.

Do I need a cell phone to play?
Most teams should have at least one member with a web-enabled phone or similar device, but participation does not require it. You can also play just as effectively by using pay phones and by having access to an internet cafe, or working with a friend at home with a computer connected to the internet and receive clues and input your team's answers.

What's the prize?
Sometimes it's $100 in gold coins--whatever the sponsors provide. Additional prizes and swag are often awarded to the runners-up and most importantly, everyone will have a wild and crazy night.

What does Cutlass provide?
One on-site Cutlass game wizard, use of one remote control treasure chest, E-Writer Frisbee-like secret message device, the latest tech gizmos, and assorted swag. Many campus games choose US$100 in gold coins as 1st prize. Monty Python's Spamalot Treasure Hunt adds one can of SPAM® Golden Honey Grail to the treasure chest.
